The woman was driving east on I-96 near the seven-mile marker when her Pontiac Vibe went off the north side of the lane and rolled over at about 11 a.m. Tuesday.

It came to rest in a wooded median area, and emergency personnel worked to free her from the wreckage. She was alone when the crash occurred, although she was initially concerned about her children's well-being. Emergency officials determined her children were safely at school.

Authorities identified the woman as Charlene Stewart, 39, of Muskegon. They said the SUV jerked over and she lost control, rolling several times. She was wearing a seatbelt, but still sustained serious injuries.

She was listed in fair condition Wednesday morning, said a spokesperson from Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The eastbound lane of I-96 remained blocked as of 12:30 p.m.
