Bruce Edward Smith, II, 41, was arrested at about 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Wesco gas station on Mercury Drive near 148th Avenue, an FBI official confirmed.

Smith appeared in U.S. District Court on the indictment the same day.

Assistant U.S. District Attorney Tim VerHey said the man is charged with a five-year felony for e-mailing a statement to the FBI that accused an Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputy of being corrupt and selling illegal narcotics.

This was an effort to discredit the deputy in another criminal investigation, the indictment said.

Smith was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

His next hearing is an arraignment and a pre-trial conference scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in front of Judge Joseph Scoville at U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids.

VerHey said no other information could be released at this time.
