The Icebox is open

Kelsey opened the Icebox last month at 14485 Cleveland Ave. Her business is in the same building that housed TJ's, a former ice cream shop that closed 11 years ago.
Kelsey has the scoop on experience — she worked at an ice cream parlor back in high school when she lived in Wisconsin.
“It was a fun summer job, but I never planned on opening up my own ice cream store,” said Kelsey, who moved to Spring Lake in 2009. “My husband and I kept driving by (the closed and for sale) TJ's wishing someone would buy it. One day we thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we should open it.'”
They completed the purchase earlier this year and updated the mechanical equipment.
They maintain TJ's multi-flavored soft serve flavors, offering 24 varieties, including coconut, peanut butter, black cherry, bubble gum and cotton candy.
Kelsey tasted close to a dozen hard ice cream brands at a trade show in Lansing and thought the Ludington-made Ashby's topped them all.
“It was very important for us to stay Michigan-made,” Kelsey said. “I thought it was really rich and creamy and had bold flavors. The texture and the creaminess to me stood out and I thought the names were fun.”
The Icebox hours are 1-10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
