Tiger path?

Sharon Arend, director of archives and historical documents for the Tigers' parent company, Illitch Holdings Inc., said it's a salute to baseball diamonds of yore.

"The path from the pitcher's mound to home plate was part of the original design — kind of a throwback to the past," she said. "In the old days, a path would wear out the grass from mound to home plate from the catcher and pitcher communicating, so some of the old parks would make a path to keep it clean looking, yet functional."

Arend said there was a similar path at the old Tiger Stadium.

"We added the one at Comerica Park at the end of last season," she said. "The Tigers and the Arizona Diamondbacks are the only two teams to have these paths."
