Trash cans for the pier?

Although the pier is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis has our answer. He said the Corps of Engineers does not have the staff assigned to collect garbage from the pier.
"Cans are not practical on the pier for several reasons — the high winds will 'self-empty' most cans, cans with strong doors or lids lack the convenience that encourages most people to use them, the remote location is a preferred spot for vandals (even the most sturdy cans wind up in the lake or river), the one-way journey out the pier and then back is labor-intensive, and all attempts of the past have failed for one of the above reasons," McGinnis explained. "We ask that people use the cans at the foot of the pier before or after they take a stroll.
"And remember, these are federal aids to navigation and are not designed for pedestrian use!"
