Boaters escape injuries

The collision happened near the entrance to Stahl’s (Hanky Pank) Bayou at about 4 p.m. Friday. It sent the four occupants of the boat into the lake.

The Coast Guard’s 25-foot inflatable boat was already on patrol and arrived on the scene within minutes to find four people from the sunken 19-foot boat were already onboard another vessel, said Boatswain’s Mate Dustin McClelland of Station Grand Haven.

“The boat’s transom was damaged and it was starting to sink,” McClelland said. “We pushed the boat onto the beach so it wasn’t a danger to other boaters. The salvage crew retrieved it the next morning.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol also responded to the scene and talked to the operator of the personal watercraft. Marine Patrol Sgt. Cal Keuning did not have information on whether or not the personal watercraft operator was ticketed.

McClelland and Keuning said the holiday weekend was otherwise safe and quiet on local waterways, and they did not encounter boaters that were drinking and driving.

“The Fourth of July went very well,” Keuning said.
