The turtle was spotted Sunday evening on the highway's southbound lanes, just south of the drawbridge, according to bystander Cindy Szymas of Grand Haven. The officer blocked traffic on the inside lane at about 8 p.m. and was attempting to capture the turtle when it started to move away from the barrier and back across the road, Szymas said.
Former East Grand Rapids firefighter Rob Huston of Cedar Springs stopped to assist the officer and was able to grab the snapper. Szymas said Huston and the police officer carried the turtle to a nearby wetland and out of danger.
“The turtle was so big that it posed a safety threat to anyone traveling in the southbound lanes of U.S. 31 over the drawbridge that might swerve to avoid it,” Szymas said. “Potential accidents avoided, snapping turtle saved.”
