Man charged in courtroom scuffle to go on trial

Todd Andrew Kline, 44, is charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer. He resisted police efforts to arrest him during a child support hearing in front of Judge Jon Van Allsburg on Oct. 11.

During Monday’s arraignment, Kline’s appointed attorney, James Piper, said his client would stand mute, but Kline raised an objection.

“This man is not my attorney,” Kline said.

Kline wanted Piper to be dismissed, but Judge Jon Hulsing denied the request and entered a not-guilty plea for Kline. The judge told Kline he would need to file a motion to remove his attorney, and the felony case would proceed to trial.

Kline remains lodged in the Ottawa County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
