Firefighters from the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety and Grand Haven Township were called to the home in the 1000 block of Columbus Avenue at about 9:50 p.m. The Spring Lake and Ferrysburg departments were called to the home, which was still on fire, shortly before 10:30 p.m.

Firefighters battled the blaze in temperatures approaching zero. They spent some time digging out a nearby fire hydrant that was encased in crusty snow and ice.

Authorities confirmed shortly before 10 that all of the home's residents were safely outside.

One of the residents said they first heard what sounded like hail on the roof. When they went upstairs to the attic, they saw smoke and the smoke alarms sounded, so they called 911.

Brown smoke and flames were seen coming from the second floor.

The fire was knocked down at a little after 11 p.m.
