Man on foot robs Holland drive-through bank

WZZM-TV • Jul 21, 2015 at 2:23 PM

The crime happened at about 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Fifth Third Bank at Ninth Street and Central Avenue in Holland.

Bank employees said the man walked up to the bank’s drive-through window, implied he had a weapon and demanded cash from the teller. The man then ran off with an unknown amount of cash.

A police K-9 unit was unsuccessful in tracking the robber, who was described as a white man in his 20s, with a black, scruffy beard. He was wearing sunglasses, a white hoodie and faded black jeans.

Hope College was temporarily placed on lockdown as a precaution after the nearby robbery. The school president's home was searched shortly after the robbery, because a resident there saw a door left open and was concerned the robber hid inside. Police did not find anyone there.

Holland police Capt. Jack Dykstra said the robbery happened on the same day as the end-of-the-year move-out at Hope College. That, and Tulip Time preparations, might have helped the robber escape, assuming he quickly ditched the white hoodie and was able to blend in with all of the other strangers on campus.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department at 616-994-7850 or Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT.
