“I wasn’t able to do that,” said Michele Georgette Bekken, 44, during a plea hearing Tuesday morning in Ottawa County Circuit Court.

Bekken pleaded guilty to embezzling $16,206 from the Holland-based Lakeshore Home Builders Association. Bekken handled the organization’s office duties.

She faces up to 10 years in prison when she is sentenced on June 30.

Judge Jon Hulsing encouraged Bekken to bring as much restitution money as she can, along with her fines and costs, to sentencing.

The judge said whatever she paid would be taken into consideration at sentencing.

Bekken remained free on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
