At a news conference Monday morning, the Muskegon County Sheriff announced Rebekah Bletsch's death is being investigated as the department's first homicide of 2014.
Bletsch, 37, was found along Automobile Road, south of Riley-Thompson Road around 6 p.m. Sunday, about three-fourths of a mile from her home.
Investigators originally thought Bletsch had been struck by a vehicle while walking or jogging, but police found multiple small caliber bullet casings near her body. Upon further examination, investigators found Bletsch had suffered a single gunshot wound to her head.
A husband and wife found Bletsch's body and tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived.
Investigators say Bletsch's husband and 11-year-old daughter were not in the county Sunday night and her husband is not a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Muskegon County Silent Observer at (231) 72-CRIME.
Investigators are working to piece together Bletsch's last moments, including when she may have left her home and who she may have talked to by phone earlier in the day. Police say Bletsch was known to walk or jog along that route.
