At his sentencing on Monday, Busscher, 27, also received 15 months probation after pleading guilty late last month to charges of careless discharge of a firearm resulting in injury and trespassing on recreational/farm land. He faced up to two years in prison or a fine of up to $2,000.
In exchange for Luke Busscher’s plea on May 28, prosecutors dismissed three lower court charges. These include failure to wear hunter orange, hunting small game without a license and wildlife conservation (taking game).
Busscher’s wife, Emily, suffered serious injuries when she was hit by pellets from his 12-gauge shotgun on Jan. 18.
Police said the couple was target practicing on private property owned by an acquaintance near 16th Avenue and Byron Road in Jamestown Township. Busscher took a shot at a rabbit just as his wife came over the top of the next hill.
Emily Busscher was hit in the face and shoulders. She was taken to Zeeland Community Hospital, but was transferred to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Emily Busscher was with her husband in the courtroom Monday.
