The 911 call came in at about 11:05 a.m. Friday, and the initial cause was believed to be from fireworks.

Friends had purchased the two-story home recently and were working on renovations. The homeowners said they bought the house to flip it, and a friend was shooting off fireworks. They were trying to put out the fire with a garden hose, but that didn't work.

As of 11:40 a.m., flames could still be seen toward the top of the house and firefighters were using chainsaws to cut open the roof for ventilation. By 11:50 a.m., personnel from three fire departments were working together to knock the fire down.

Columbus Avenue from Sixth to Seventh Street was closed to traffic, hours before crowds were expected into town for the annual Fourth of July Fireworks show. Columbus is the one-way street that goes east out of downtown.
