Forensic analysis was used to identify the dead man as Mark Emerson Lamb, said Jeff Hawke, director of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.
An autopsy completed Thursday morning revealed that the cause of death was drowning.
“There is no indication of foul play,” Hawke said. “Family members have been notified.”
Police did not say where the family members were from.
Lamb’s body was discovered shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday. A dredge crew found it floating in the river as they were moving their vessel for an incoming freighter.
Detectives used items found with Lamb’s body to re-trace his path over the Fourth of July weekend, Hawke said. That led to interviews with people who had contact with him in the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area on Sunday afternoon.
Hawke said Lamb was linked to an impromptu campsite near the Pottawattomie Bridge on Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township.
“Although impossible to confirm, it is likely that Mr. Lamb entered the water near that location,” Hawke said.
