The Shell gas station at 2628 Henry St. was held up shortly after 6 a.m. Norton Shores police said the suspect entered the store’s front door wearing dark clothing and a ski mask over his face, and carrying a dark revolver. The suspect demanded money from the cash register, in which an undisclosed amount of money was taken.

The clerk, a 24-year-old Muskegon Heights man, was then ordered into the back room where cigarettes were loaded into a back pack.

Police said the clerk feared for his safety, so he pulled out his own handgun and started firing at the suspect. The clerk fired approximately 10 rounds inside of the store as the robber fled out the front door without returning fire.

It is unknown at this time if the suspect was hit by any of the shots.

The suspect jumped into the passenger’s seat of a newer model black four-door Chevrolet, which was parked on the north end of the building. There was a second suspect driving the vehicle, but no description was obtained.

The vehicle left east on Sherman Boulevard.

The suspect was further described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, with a thin but muscular build.
