Witnesses told police they thought the car was a black Chevrolet Impala or Malibu. However, after analysis of store surveillance video, police determined the car was an indigo blue pearl Hyundai Sonata.

The car was last seen fleeing east on Sherman Boulevard after the 6:15 a.m. robbery at the Shell gas station, 2628 Henry St.

Police are looking for a tall, thin but muscular black man who was wearing dark clothing and a ski mask over his face when he entered the store carrying a dark revolver. He took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register before being chased from the store as the clerk fired at least 10 rounds from a handgun at him.

The suspect jumped into the waiting car and fled.

When their investigation is complete, Lt. Jon Gale of the Norton Shores Police Department said they will turn over the report to the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Gale declined to comment on possible charges against the clerk who shot at the suspect.

“That’s up to the prosecutor to decide,” he said.

Gale noted that people were divided on whether or not store clerks should carry guns.

“It’s a pretty big storm,” he said. “We’re not going to get in the middle of it.”

Anyone with information on this robbery is asked to call Norton Shores police at 231-733-2691 or Silent Observer at 231-722-7463.
