It’s not the only one in Michigan, said John Richard, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Grand Region. 

“Back when this interchange was built in the early ‘60s, there was likely no travel demand or need for it,” he explained. “The westbound off- and the eastbound on-ramps were constructed to accommodate daily commuters from the east, primarily Grand Rapids. Dominant movements with available funding determined how things were built.”

Also, there’s a full interchange less than two miles away, Richard noted.
