Chuck Wilson of Chattanooga, Tenn., said his wife, Karen, complained of neck pain after the 2:45 p.m. crash.
Wilson said he was stopped at the red light, waiting for it to change.
“It came from behind me,” he said of the semi-tractor trailer. “It was swinging sideways. I could see it in my rear-view mirror.”
The driver of the semi, Tom Case of Owosso, said he was distracted by an SUV that cut him off, looked back and realized he was not going to be able to stop in time for the red light.
“I went from the inside lane to the outside trying to avoid,” he said. “I would have hit the ditch before I hit that car. I didn’t realize my trailer would hit them.”
Case said he locked up his brakes and his trailer slid sideways, hitting the back of the Subaru Legacy.
Wilson said he and his wife had come to the area for a family reunion. They had just started their return trip home at the time of the crash.
Southbound traffic was slowed down to one lane while emergency personnel worked the crash.
