Reported Robinson Township shooting a hoax

It turns out the incident was a hoax.

A situation known as swatting — the tricking of any emergency service, such as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, into dispatching an emergency response based on the false report of an on-going critical incident, occurred at this location, said Sgt. Greg Rotman of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

The location of the alleged shooting was a home on Sugarbush Road, in a subdivision near the intersection of 144th Avenue and Green Street.

Officers verified everyone was OK in the home. They cleared the scene shortly after 9 p.m.

Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the incident occurred after a teenager in the home was playing on online game with gamers from other locations outside of the area.

At one point, the suspect threatened to "swat" the family at the home on Sugarbush.

Shortly after that, Ottawa County Central Dispatch received the 911 call transferred from the Grand Rapids Police Department, Bennett said.

This activity has become a problem with police agencies throughout the country, he said.
