This week, we take an up-close look at the old coal tipple and Pere Marquette 1223 engine, box car and the two cabooses off Jackson Street in Grand Haven's Chinook Pier Park.
The Pere Marquette 1223 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 (Berkshire) engines. It was built in 1941 and retired from service just 10 years later. It was moved in 1981 to Grand Haven, where it has been lovingly restored by a group of volunteers affiliated with the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. The 1223 was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The adjacent coal tipple was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
