Downtown Grand Haven business will know more on Monday if a new Principal Shopping District and special assessment for their district will be implemented. City Council is being asked to consider a Master Plan amendment that includes language regarding a PSD within the city's downtown development authority (DDA) boundaries, as well as resolutions designating the city's Main Street DDA Board as the PSD board, and setting a special assessment for the PSD.

As part of its Community Artist Series, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven will host a lecture series next week featuring Dr. James Fleming. The series of six lectures will take place over three days, Sept. 23-25, at the church, 508 Franklin Ave. A scholar of biblical archaeology, history and interpretation, Fleming is said to have the ability to make biblical texts come alive. His teaching skills and techniques inspire audiences around the world. He is a biblical scholar and man of faith who has lived in Israel for more than 30 years.

Ed Grafton, a Spring Lake attorney and author, will discuss his book, "Undertow: A Crime's Story,' at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's Brown Bag Luncheon series on Monday, Sept. 26. It will be held at the library, 200 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven, at 11:30 a.m. Grafton, using the pen name Henry Granger, wrote about a 1933 bank robbery in Grand Haven, creating fictitious characters to help convey the story to the readers. Grafton will have copies of his book on hand to sell and sign. Participants are invited to bring their lunch.

Friday night, Andrew Sytsma was taking bites of salmon. This morning, he hopes the salmon are the ones biting. Sytsma, of Sparta, will join his dad, Gary Sytsma of Grand Haven, for their fourth and final salmon fishing tournament of the year. They spent Friday evening enjoying the scents and sounds at the eighth annual Fresh Catch Fish Boil along Grand Haven's waterfront. "This is our second year here, so I think that makes us regulars,' Gary said. "It's good food, good entertainment, and you see people you may only see once a year.'

Abby Cole celebrated her 16th birthday on Thursday the same way she's celebrated every other day on the volleyball court - by dominating the opposition. Cole, the Bucs' 6-foot-5 junior who has committed to play for the University of Michigan, recorded team highs with 12 kills, four aces and four blocks, helping the Buccaneers held off O-K Red Conference foe Hudsonville, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 on the Bucs' Purple Out celebration.

Grand Haven senior Jake Vanderlaan scored a hat trick - all in the opening 20 minutes - leading the Buccaneers to a dominating 5-0 victory over rival West Ottawa on Thursday. Nate Rose assisted on Vanderlaan's first goal. Mike Moran set up the second, and the third was unassisted. The city of Grand Haven has introduced a new government dashboard that aims to provide a glimpse into the health of the city and meet the requirements of the state's Economic Vitality Incentive Program. The Economic Vitality Incentive Program requires local government receiving statutory revenue sharing under Public Act 140 to create a Citizens' Guide to Finance and an Internet performance dashboard. "I am very much in favor of this (dashboard), and I am also in favor of the other report,' City Finance Director Jim Bonamy said.

As the salmon action increases in the river systems, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminded anglers that snagging in Michigan waters is unlawful, contrary to websites and rumors that say the law has changed.
