The Grand Haven Salmon Festival, in its eighth year, celebrates the passing of summer while welcoming the fall harvest season and salmon migration, highlighting Grand Haven as an autumn destination. It takes place this weekend along the city's waterfront. Grand Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Marci Cisneros said with the event approaching the decade mark, they've been able to tweak it to benefit those who attend.

The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation announced Monday that it has launched a challenge grant program to assist a local group maintain the Grand Haven lighthouses. The foundation's $100,000 grant, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, will help kick off the "Keep The Light On' campaign by the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy. The grant will match each new gift to the community campaign up to $100,000. The matching grant program was presented Monday evening at the foundation's 40th anniversary celebration.

Another season of live music was kicked off at Loutit District Library on Sunday. Muskegon musicians Ruth and Max Bloomquist performed for the library crowd and played a mix of songs from their own personal catalog, as well as a variety of covers. "I found this show today to be particularly emotionally involving,' said Max, who plays the string bass. "I was really getting a warm vibe from the crowd - so I was more into it, so it was cool.'

The Northwest Ottawa Recreation Authority and The Brethren of the Great Lakes, a performing pirate troupe, are joining forces for a "Buccaneer/Pirate Party' on Saturday, Sept. 24. The party for both boys and girls in grades K-3 will be held at Lakeshore Middle School's Cafe from 1-2:30 p.m. Kids will enjoy the fun of becoming a buccaneer or pirate for a day. Wear your pirate costume. Have fun with treasure hunts, games and prizes, and make your own sundae.

Grand Haven officials will once again be relying on the help of Grand Valley State University students to count the number of deer located in the city. "In the next few weeks, we're going to be driving around the city again (looking for deer),' said Sam Janson, assistant to City Manager Pat McGinnis. The city of Grand Haven will be commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 anniversary all day on Sunday. At 12:01 a.m., the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety will have its ladder truck on display with the ladder up at the public safety office, 525 Washington Ave. A flag will be draped off the ladder and it will hang over Washington Avenue.

The American Legion post in Grand Haven will hold a special program to mark 9/11 at 10 a.m. Sunday. The program will be held at the post, 700 S. Harbor Ave. Coffee and donuts will be served after the program.
