Bucs' offense in command in blowout victory

There was concern in the off-season that Grand Haven's varsity football team had lost too many offensive playmakers to graduation and some growing pains were in order. If anything, Thursday's 48-21 thumping of Traverse City West at Buccaneer Stadium eased those concerns and proved that seven new starters on that side of the ball have grown up in a hurry.

Prep volleyball: Bucs top Lakers, but can't run table at home quad

Grand Haven continued a recent trend on the volleyball court, going 2-1 at a home quad meet. The Buccaneers scored wins over Unity Christian (25-23, 25-14) and Spring Lake (25-19, 25-19) before losing to Forest Hills Northern (15-25, 25-19, 18-16). "We came out strong against Unity and controlled the tempo of that game,' coach Katy Walters said. "Then in Game 1 against Northern we did the same thing. Game 2 and 3, we relaxed too much, made too many errors, and when we finally decided to start playing we were already in a hole.

Harbor Drive construction detours to begin Tuesday

Grand Haven motorists will have to find new routes if they are planning on traveling near Harbor Drive next week. Beginning Tuesday, Mulligan's Drive will be closed due to construction. Access to the Tri-Cities Family YMCA and Mulligan's Hollow Recreational Area will be via Y Drive, off Harbor Drive. Also on Tuesday, Harbor Drive will be closed to through-traffic from the south side of the intersection of Y Drive and extending to the south side of the intersection with Prospect Street.

Henni Campbell cherishes 25 years with GH school district

Henni Campbell's four bosses at Grand Haven Area Public Schools shared a common trait. They were all visionaries, she said. Campbell, 65, who has been an administrative assistant to the superintendent for the past 25 years, officially retired on Wednesday. During her tenure with the Grand Haven school district, Campbell has worked with superintendents Joseph Zapytowski, William Dean, Rick Kent and Keith Konarska. Campbell said she enjoyed her time with each one of them.

City invited to submit full facade grant application

Progress is being made in an attempt to obtain grant funding that would improve the look of several buildings along Washington Avenue in Grand Haven. City Planner Kristin Keery said the Michigan Strategic Fund board last week invited the city of Grand Haven to submit a full application for facade grant funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. She said it is a "positive sign' that the city has been invited to participate this far in the program.

Guided Lake Forest Cemetery walk set for Sept. 9

Although a headstone tells the birth and the death of an individual buried in the cemetery, there is more. Jane Ladley will be the tour guide at Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9. Ladley fills in where the headstone leaves off, sharing the stories of Grand Haven residents who were the backbone of the community.

‘Icons of GH’ to be presented twice at museum

Hyland Gardens, The Barn, Fourth Ward School - these are just a few of many sights that remain in our memories and will be revisited by Dr. Wallace Ewing at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum in two free programs. The "Icons of Grand Haven' will be presented at the museum's Brown Bag Luncheon series on Monday, Sept. 12, beginning at 11:30 a.m.; and again at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. Charter boat crew fishes sailor out of rough Lake Mich.

Dana Bonney has been running a charter fishing service out of Grand Haven since 1984 and has been a captain since 1987, but he's never had to handle a situation like he did last week. "This is the first time I've ever had to pull somebody out of the water,' he said. Bonney, his brother Rob and their customers were heading back into the Grand Haven channel on their charter fishing boat, the Danel, late Saturday afternoon. They were coming in earlier than usual because some rough weather hit before it was expected.

Grand Haven plans Labor Day community walk

Grand Haven residents won't have to travel to Mackinaw City to join the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk activities. The city of Grand Haven is organizing a Third Street Bridge Walk on Labor Day at 9 a.m. as part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. Event organizers said the Labor Day walks link communities together for health, fitness and active living - similar to how the Mackinac Bridge links both Michigan peninsulas.
