Nancy O'Neill has been a Love INC volunteer since 2003 and she has seen her share of area residents in need of food. But the Grand Haven resident said she's never seen that need reach the level that she has witnessed in the past two years. "The need is great in these difficult times,' she said. Love INC and other area food pantries - The Salvation Army in Grand Haven and The People Center in Spring Lake - are finding their shelves devoid of food stock, especially protein foods.

Artists are are being given an opportunity to show their talents to the public in an ongoing art series being conducted at the C2C Gallery, 41 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven. The third event in the series took place Friday night and featured Ypsilanti-based pastel artist Shaun Williams. "I just got into the pastels four years ago and I've been heavily into it since then,' he said.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial Monument Committee is closing in on its goal to raise $130,000 for a monument honoring soldiers killed during World War II and wars that have followed. Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth Kelly, co-chairman of the fundraising committee, said the committee has raised $109,000. "We still need $21,000,' he said. "We are looking to our supportive community to contribute that amount by our tentative dedication day of Veterans Day (Nov. 11).'

For more than a century, countless year-round and summer-only residents have called the houses and cottages of the Highland Park home. The Highland Park Association is going to honor that legacy with a celebration marking the 125th year of the Grand Haven neighborhood. "It's a nice place to come to,' said Judy Mehring, a part-time resident from Boston who comes to the area during the summer. Mehring's water color painting of a trail in Highland Park was selected by the association to commemorate the 125th anniversary.

"Children of God' - featuring the works of two photographers, a painter and charcoal drawer - opens Sunday in the Atrium Gallery of the Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven. The public is invited to a gallery walk and reception with the artists beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The church is at the corner of Sheldon and Robbins roads. Photographs taken by Grand Haven residents David Hoekema and Harley Dyk will be on display, along with paintings by Paul Stoub and charcoal drawings by Sandra Bellerive.

Police in West Michigan have a wedding band mystery on their hands. Michigan State Police Sgt. John Tillman said a woman from Muskegon County's Fruitport Township came into the Grand Haven post on Tuesday afternoon carrying a gold ring with the inscription "W.D.F to O' inside and two other worn-off letters. Also inside the 14-karat gold band is the date "8/14/40' that may be the wedding date of the ring's owner.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools has been named one of the winners of a statewide 2011 Education Excellence Award program. The Michigan Association of School Boards and SET SEG School Insurance Specialists recently honored programs that represented 16 counties across Michigan. Winners will move on to a second round to determine "Michigan's Best' and the recipients of a $1,500 prize to help further the goals of their programs.

Just as Gov. Rick Snyder has been urging local communities to collaborate, the city of Grand Haven and Ottawa County will be working together on a collaborative project of their own. The city will be working with the county to perform its assessing services. "We're going to give it a shot and see how it works,' City Manager Pat McGinnis said.
