A construction project slated to begin after Labor Day on Harbor Drive is designed to improve water service for area residents, and provide new street surface between Y Drive and Prospect Street near Grand Haven State Park. According to Grand Haven Special Project Manager Julie Beaton, the project is really several projects wrapped into one. These projects include installing a new raw water intake line from the state park to the Northwest Ottawa Water System filtration plant and installing new public utilities beneath the roadway, including water and sewer lines.

The Tri-Cities Historical Museum will be hosting a downtown Grand Haven walk at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. The walk will begin at the museum's Depot location, 1 N. Harbor Ave. The tour will travel east to Central Park and return to the Depot Museum. The city of Grand Haven will be celebrating community with an end-of-summer cookout at East Grand River Park on Saturday. "We are going to have a summer-style cook-out,' said event organizer John Stuparits, manager of the Grand Haven-Spring Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant. Stuparits said the Bayou Picnic is free and will feature a pig roast where pulled-pork sandwiches, baked beans, corn on the cob and rolls will be served. Over the past several years, attendance at the annual city picnic has averaged about 800 or so people.

A 17-year-old Grand Haven boy was rescued from Lake Michigan near Grand Haven's south pier just as Tuesday evening's storm started rumbling through the area. His name was not available. "Witnesses said, if it wasn't for the surfers, the kid probably wouldn't have been rescued,' said Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

Have you ever wondered what exactly the Coast Guard does on a daily basis? Have you ever wanted to see what the inside of one of those rescue boats looks like? The Tri-Cities Historical Museum is hosting a tour of Coast Guard Station Grand Haven at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. The tour is limited to 15 people, so advanced registration is necessary. Those attending are asked to park across from the Coast Guard Station in the city parking lot, adjacent to the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power diesel plant.

Free airplane rides are being offered to children ages 8-17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Haven Municipal Airport. The Experimental Aircraft Association launched the Young Eagles program in 1992 to give interested young people an opportunity to go flying. The children will ride with a licensed pilot, learn how a pilot does a pre-flight inspection of the airplane and see how the controls work. No appointment is required, but children must have a permission slip signed by a parent. The forms will be provided at the airport.

Emergency crews from Coast Guard Station Grand Haven and the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety were called to the Grand River channel shortly before 6:30 this morning when a charter fishing boat was reported on fire. Nobody was injured and the customers safely evacuated when the boat pulled over at Escanaba Park near the Coast Guard station. Kathy Johnson of Whitmore Lake said it was a scary way to start her first charter fishing trip.
