Grand Haven officials will once again be relying on the help of Grand Valley State University students to count the number of deer located in the city. "In the next few weeks, we're going to be driving around the city again (looking for deer),' said Sam Janson, assistant to City Manager Pat McGinnis. The city of Grand Haven will be commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 anniversary all day on Sunday. At 12:01 a.m., the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety will have its ladder truck on display with the ladder up at the public safety office, 525 Washington Ave. A flag will be draped off the ladder and it will hang over Washington Avenue.

The American Legion post in Grand Haven will hold a special program to mark 9/11 at 10 a.m. Sunday. The program will be held at the post, 700 S. Harbor Ave. Coffee and donuts will be served after the program.

That smoky shadow looming in New York's sunny September sky is vividly etched in Lt. Cmdr. Sean Brady's memory. On Sept. 11, 2001, the Coast Guardsman watched the second tower rapidly descend from the top floor down, suffocating the city with pulverized concrete dust.

Grand Haven City Council is mulling an ordinance update that would allow people to ride skateboards on city streets. "Skateboarding is not a crime,' City Councilman Mike Fritz said at Tuesday night's council meeting. "It is really not a crime - I truly believe that.' Fritz said that skateboarding isn't different than riding in the street on a bicycle or jogging in the road. "We're not rigid with runners, we're not rigid with bicycles and we don't have to be rigid with skateboards,' he said.

Volunteers are being sought for Grand Haven ArtWalk 2011, Sept. 21 to Oct. 8. Volunteer opportunities are available for people who want to pass out maps and ballots, for those wanting to help with special events, and for anyone wishing to offer clerical assistance. One event that will require a lot of volunteers is the two-day Indie Rock Music Festival, Sept. 23-24. Eighteen volunteers are needed per shift.

The fall season of the Tuesday Musicale Club will begin with a free program at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 13, at the Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave. The club will continue to celebrate its 100th anniversary with concerts and music scholarships for area students. To support the scholarship program, yearly dues are $40 for monthly concerts through May 2012. President Adele Zelenka will open the Sept. 13 program and introduce Mayor Roger Bergman, who will give Tuesday Musicale a special proclamation. Former presidents will also be honored.
