On Wednesday, Aug. 24, the local museum's "Our Woodland Ways' program will highlight Madeline LaFromboise, an Ottawa Indian who was the first female business owner in the Tri-Cities. Children will learn about where Madeline grew up, what business she owned and about how she has been honored by the state of Michigan for her accomplishments. The local Catholic community will be celebrating summer with a "community-building' festival this week. The St. Patrick's & St. Anthony's Community Summer Festival began Tuesday evening with a family bike ride and runs through Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 920 Fulton Ave. in Grand Haven. Downtown Grand Haven streets will be filled with deals instead of wheels this Friday and Saturday during the Grand Haven Annual Sidewalk Sale. The first three blocks of Washington Avenue, from Harbor Drive to Third Street, will be closed to traffic so merchants and buyers can meet to find the best deals. "We have more businesses within our overall district (participating) than we have had in the last few years,' Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Dana Kollewehr said.

Residents who use Mulligan's Hollow Drive are being asked to be aware of construction taking place this week. Mulligan's Hollow Drive will be closed due to construction from Wednesday through Friday. Commuters are being asked to use Y Drive off Harbor Drive to access the local YMCA and Mulligan's Hollow area.

The annual Art on the Riverfront - an outdoor juried art show held along Grand Haven's boardwalk at the Municipal Marina - will take place Saturday. Now on its 11th year, the one-day exhibit showcases the works of accomplished regional artists in a wide variety of media - including painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, glass, wood and metal. The show is sponsored by the Grand Haven Area Arts Council and is free to the public. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grand Haven City Council unanimously approved an Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption Certificate for Grand Haven Custom Molding on Monday, a move that officials say will help the local business grow in the coming months. "This abatement is very important to us,' company owner Karl Chapel said Monday night. "The economy is tough and we need as many additional jobs in the community as we can get.' Per the deal, the IFT Exemption is for $4 million over a 12-year period.

The Northwest Ottawa Recreation Authority's Recreation Summer School will be holding its annual car wash fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The students work to help support their program by raising the money and funds themselves. They plan, organize and run the car wash - giving them the opportunity to improve their skills in math and organization, as well as giving them an opportunity to learn how to market and run their own "business,' NORA officials said.

A downtown Grand Haven hair salon will host an eight-hour cut-a-thon on Saturday to raise money for the Center for Women in Transition. Donaylle Nicole Hair Studio, 117 Washington Ave., will forward 100 percent of the proceeds from the cut-a-thon to the nonprofit CWIT. Haircuts will be available for $20 and a chair massage can be enjoyed for $1 per minute; in addition to face-painting, mini-manicures, hair feathers and more. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. during the annual Sidewalk Sales in downtown Grand Haven.
