A former Gage Motor Mall employee will serve 210 days in jail for embezzling more than $70,000 from the business where she once served as office manager. Amy Ruth Barnes-Trusty, 38, of Muskegon was also placed on probation for 60 months when he was sentenced Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court. She will be allowed to participate in the work release program. Barnes-Trusty was ordered to pay restitution of $72,565, and pay fines and costs of $266. She was also sentenced to 210 days in jail for forgery. The sentences will be served at the same time.

Sgt. Clint Holt of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety was among the 22 people who attended the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project's "Surfboard Rescue Techniques' class at the Grand Haven State Park pavilion on Sunday. "Surfers are the first-responders,' Holt said. "We're thankful for you being out there. (You) even rescued one of our own once.'

The boom of a pirate cannon and a taste of pirate cuisine greeted visitors during the opening night of the Michigan Pirate Festival. Monday night's Loutit District Library program included an arms demonstration at Grand Haven's Central Park - where small pistols, as well as a cannon, were fired. Austin Durham, a re-enactor from Niles who goes by the pirate Hookah Joe, said he enjoys going out to the public to demonstrate vintage firearms and weaponry.

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, will host a "town hall meeting' in Grand Haven on Wednesday to discuss the debt vote and other federal issues. The meeting at the Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave., is open to the public. It will begin at 7 p.m.

A summer full of hard work in the weight room and perfecting skills on the field during 7-on-7 passing camps will finally be rewarded today, as prep football teams across the state of Michigan open up their seasons with their first official practice. Over the next three days the Grand Haven Tribune sports staff will feature an early glimpse of area football teams at Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Fruitport - three programs that are coming off shared conference championships and playoff berths a year ago.

Despite rain on Tuesday and during the morning on Saturday, organizers of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival said this year's event was a success. "Everything went as planned with the exception of the weather, but you can't control that,' Mike Smith, Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival executive director, said. Smith said the threat of rain and thunderstorms caused them to cancel some of the opening night events on Tuesday, but they were able to be rescheduled.

The unexpected rain showers Saturday morning that lasted into the early afternoon didn't stop the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Grand Parade. But the TV meteorologists that braved the parade route got their fair share of heckling from the wet crowd. "On target? Not so much today!' Grand Haven resident Belinda Clark shouted to the WZZM-TV "On Target Weather' van as it passed her on Seventh Street at Pennoyer Avenue.
