Loutit District Library’s Pirate Festival begins Monday

The fifth annual Michigan Pirate Festival will be centered at Loutit District Library next week. The festival features a loud blast on the first day as black powder specialist Tony Osterberg fires a time-period cannon and small arms in Grand Haven's Central Park at 6 p.m. Monday. This demonstration will be repeated at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Additionally, the pirate sail in will take place on Friday at 6 p.m. near Waterfront Stadium. The Michigan Pirate Festival in Central Park event begins, Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m.

Honoring the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard

Maura Krueger sat in the front row of the U.S. Coast Guard National Memorial Service clutching the hands of her husband, Dave, and son, Matt - who sat on each side of her. The three were there to honor their son and brother, Lt. Sean Krueger, who died while serving in the Coast Guard. "It means a great deal,' Maura said.

Latest ‘Walk of History’ points note origins of festival fireworks, memorial service

Vice Adm. Sally Brice-O'Hara, vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, noted the contrast of the 11th and 12th points for "The Walk of Coast Guard History' installed this year. The 11th point identifies the first fireworks show over Dewey Hill, shot off on Aug. 3, 1940; and the 12th point recognizes the first Coast Guard memorial service held in Grand Haven on Aug. 4, 1939.

Emergency crews douse wildfire on Dewey Hill

Firefighters had to put out an unexpected light show next to the Grand Haven Musical Fountain on Dewey Hill on Friday night. According to Sgt. Mike Ercole of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, crews from Ferrysburg, Grand Haven and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol were dispatched at about 10 p.m. on a report of a 50-by-50-foot wildfire on the hill. Ercole said the likely cause of the fire was because of fireworks that were set off in the area, but they aren't sure who launched the fireworks.

Ex-Calif. girl named Coast Guard City USA Youth Ambassador

The newest youth ambassador for Coast Guard City USA is a California girl transplanted to Spring Lake. Elizabeth McLaughlin, 18, was announced the winner of the annual scholarship program during the Walk of History presentation in front of Grand Haven City Hall on Friday afternoon. The announcement was originally scheduled to take place prior to the Coast Guard Festival Street Dance on Tuesday night, but it was postponed along with the dance because of the stormy weather forecast for that evening.

Sounds of the Beach Boys rock Waterfront Stadium

Beach Boys fans took a trip down memory lane on Thursday night with the tribute band Good Vibrations at Waterfront Stadium. The band played an array of Beach Boys cuts, ranging from "409' and "Catch a Wave' to slower tracks such as "Surfer Girl' and "In My Room.' Spring Lake resident Bill Chaddock said he was impressed by the band's performance, as well as the crowd's involvement in the show.

Native American story to be read at museum

Louanna Welty of Grand Haven will be reading the Native American story "Nanabosho Steals Fire' as part of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's "Our Woodland Ways' program at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. The program takes place at the museum's Akeley location, 200 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven. This free program does not require advanced registration. For more information, call 842-0700.

As market dives, local financial advisers say ‘trust your risk tolerance’

Alishia Terrill of Terrill's Financial Services LLC said the worst thing people can do during the market downturn is to sell. "You have to trust in your risk tolerance,' said Terrill, who said she screens her clients' risk levels and needs before selecting financial products. "If you still have 20 years left to retirement, leave it alone. If you look back on history, those who stayed in the market in 1929 recovered more quickly than those who sold and jumped back in.

Motor City Glee to wrap up festival entertainment

The Motor City Glee, a group based on the popular TV show Glee, will provide the final entertainment act for the 2011 Coast Guard Festival. The show at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Waterfront Stadium features entertainers ages 18-24 from the Detroit area. Derek Rafferty, president of E3 Detroit, which formed the group in January, said Motor City Glee recently performed in Grand Rapids before an audience of 1,700. "It is a very entertaining show,' he said.

Coast Guard parade route and fireworks road closings

The annual Coast Guard Festival Grand Parade and fireworks show will create several street closings in Grand Haven on Saturday. The parade participants will be staging in the residential area near Lakeshore Middle School, 900 S. Cutler St., beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. All streets within a two-block radius will be closed to accommodate the staging area. No traffic will be allowed west of Eighth Street, on Washington and Franklin avenues, and on Clinton and Pennoyer streets.
