Area residents and boaters are used to seeing Coast Guard crews on patrol in local waterways, and responding to the occasional water rescue. What they do with the rest of their time remains somewhat a mystery to those outside the fenced-in Coast Guard station on Harbor Drive. When the waves are rolling in Lake Michigan, the big silver lifeboat with the crew dressed in blue and orange is not going out just to ride the waves, according to Operations Petty Officer Sean Long.

Tom Treutler's vision of introducing the sport of baseball to the city of Hanoi, Vietnam, has made remarkable strides in just a short three-year time span. Treutler, a Grand Haven native and 1986 graduate of Grand Haven High School, is the executive director of Vietnam Pony Baseball. He's also the head coach of the Hanoi Capitals, a squad he's coached in both Pony and Little League competition.

More than 50 people of all ages stepped to the beat of the music - laughing and trying to keep in sync with their neighbors. Grace Stanton of the North Ottawa Community Council on Aging danced with them Wednesday at Mulligan's Hollow - calling out directions, numbers and turns to the crowd. "It's a lot of fun,' Stanton said. "And you can be little, you can be older. There's really no age limit to line dancing.'

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, compares the nation's debt and spending agreement to a baseball game. And he isn't about to say that Congress and President Barack Obama hit one out of the park. The "Mighty Mac' came in to Grand Haven Monday afternoon with one commander and will be leaving Sunday with a new face at the helm. Command of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw was transferred from Cmdr. Scott J. Smith to Cmdr. Michael J. Davanzo during a ceremony at Escanaba Park on Wednesday afternoon. Smith, who has been commanding officer aboard the Mackinaw since May 2008, said he was honored to have been able to serve on the Cheboygan-based cutter. "I'm happy to report that I drove the heck out of that ship,' Smith said.

Bryan David Snuffer is displaying more than a dozen pieces of his Coast Guard paintings in an exhibit at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's Depot location, 1 N. Harbor Ave., through Aug. 30. The exhibit is titled "Semper Paratus: An Exhibit of Fine Art Telling the Coast Guard Story.'

The city of Grand Haven invites the public to place blankets, chairs and other spot-marking materials on all public property to reserve space for Saturday's Coast Guard Festival Grand Parade and that evening's fireworks show after 12:01 a.m. Friday. Materials placed before midnight will be removed by city crews; and no plastic tarps, duct tape, rocks, stakes or spray paint are allowed for reserving spots. These items will be removed by the city.

The Coast Guard Festival's 10th annual Street Dance was a night later, but organizers and dancers were glad for it. "Luckily, we could move it from Tuesday night when the weather forecast was lousy and make it on Wednesday night,' Street Dance Chairman Roger Jonas said at the event on Washington Avenue, between Third and Fourth streets. "And I think people got the message. Look at the crowds down here.'
