A second write-in candidate has joined the race to become Grand Haven's next mayor, facing candidate Geri McCaleb and write-in candidate Ken Sharkey. Chris Collett, a U.S. Army veteran from the war in Iraq, annouced his intentions today to run as a write-in candidate for the position. According to Collett, he is running as "an energetic and committed candidate, who is intent upon the revival of a great American city with amazing resources and people to offer to the country.'

Plans are being developed to revitalize the icons on the south pier of the Grand River channel - the aging lighthouse and foghouse structures that draw residents and visitors alike. "The city is in the process of approving a quit-claim deed from the federal government,' said Dave Karpin, head of the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy. Once this occurs, Karpin said the city will own the lighthouses, but the conservancy group will maintain and operate them for the city.

The director of the local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization said today that collections being taken by someone going door to door in the name of that organization was a scam. "Somebody was knocking on doors on Hillcrest Street (in Grand Haven) near the hospital last night, claiming to be from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wisconsin,' Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lakeshore Director Regina Sjoberg said this morning. "We never go door to door and we certainly wouldn't go collecting in another state.'

The members of the Rotary Club of Grand Haven took a new approach to the public service projects they are working on - trading in the brick and mortar for something different in an effort to help young children entering the Grand Haven Area Public Schools system. Rotary's new fundraising benefit held June 30, "A D'Vine Event,' generated $15,000 for the Grand Haven Schools Foundation. "In the past, Rotary has picked a real brick-and-mortar type of project,' Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis said.

Grand Haven Rotary Club will be hosting its annual pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. The fundraiser will be held outdoors along the waterfront behind 1 S. Harbor Ave., at the foot of Washington and Franklin avenues. A breakfast of pancakes, sausages, eggs, orange juice and coffee is $6.50 for adults and $5.50 for anyone over age 65 or under age 10. Kids under age 5 eat free. Grand Haven Rotary is part of Rotary International, a global network of community volunteers. This fundraiser will benefit local community projects and projects around the world.

A letter to the editor complaining about the display of a Nazi swastika flag in a downtown storefront has sparked a lot more than the usual number of online comments from Grand Haven Tribune readers. Wynnewood, Pa., resident Sarah Franzel, who visited Grand Haven recently, said in her letter published Tuesday: "I don't know why someone would display this particular piece of history. I feel it is a bad judgment to do so.' Franzel said she also took issue with the citizens of Grand Haven "for tolerating this display of racial hatred.'
