The Sunset Coast Cruisers raised more than $800 Wednesday in memory of a Grand Haven public safety officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty 17 years ago. The 16th annual Scott Flahive Memorial Cruise drew in 112 cars old and new. "Last year I had 150 (cars),' said Kurt Pravda, president of the Sunset Coast Cruisers and organizer of the event. "I think the heat's keeping people down.' The drive is kind of like a funeral procession, Pravda said.

The eastern corner of Beechtree Street and Fulton Avenue will soon have a new look. Permits have been issued for the demolition of the old Eagle Ottawa Leather Co. facility, and crews have begun the process of bringing heavy equipment to the site to begin work, Grand Haven City Planner Kristin Keery said. "They got the go-ahead and clearance from the city,' Keery said. Spring Lake-based Wachter Excavating is the company handling the demolition of the facility.

Two teenagers are OK after after getting caught up in the currents of Lake Michigan at Grand Haven State Park. Rescuers were called to the park shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on reports that two teens - ages 14 and 15 - were in distress. Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Sgt. Randy Poel said the teens were swimming in the waves and got caught in the current, which began carrying them unknowingly toward the pier. He said two off-duty lifeguards were able to swim to the two teens and determined that they were OK.

For the fourth year in a row, the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg will be hosting a career exploration event called "Boomerang' in an effort to connect local business professionals with area youth. The Chamber is now registering businesses for this year's event, which will take place on Oct. 25. Local businesses will spend that day interacting with nearly 800 local high school students.

Grand Haven officials have created a policy that aims to reinforce plans to create a complete system of transportation options in the community. City Council unanimously Monday approved a measure creating a Complete Streets policy on July 18. "This doesn't tie our hands at all,' City Manager Pat McGinnis said. "It just states what we are already doing.'

UPDATE: A 70-year-old Grand Haven man drove his car off Sheldon Road, ran over some trees and a street sign, and damaged a power pole before smashing into a tree shortly after noon Tuesday. David Treloar only suffered minor injuries in the crash, police said. He was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital, just two blocks away. A hospital spokeswoman said he was treated and released on Tuesday. Treloar lives on the 500 block of Orchard Avenue, near the accident scene.

A Coopersville man who escaped from an Ottawa County deputy's car and evaded police for three days earlier this summer pleaded guilty to all of the related charges on Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court. Jordan Michael Mulder, 20, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the Ottawa County prosecutor's office not file additional charges, according to court files. Sentencing was set for Aug. 19 at 9:30 a.m. Mulder remains in jail with bond set at $10,000 on each of the five charges.
