Documentary on predicting health to be shown at library

Can your ZIP code really predict whether you will develop diabetes, heart disease or cancer? While Ottawa County was recently named the healthiest county in Michigan, are there geographic segments of its population who are at higher risk for disease? The Ottawa County Health Department will host a special screening of the PBS documentary, "Unnatural Causes: Place Matters,' at Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3. It will be followed by a discussion of local health.

City Council OKs public safety director recruitment profile

Grand Haven City Council took its first steps Monday night toward hiring a director for the city's Department of Public Safety. Council approved an official recruitment profile that will be used to help search and select a new public safety director. City Manager Pat McGinnis said the next steps in the process involve figuring out where they want to post the job position and when it will be done.

Area athletes playing it safe in the heat

With temperatures climbing into the low 90s and not much of a cooling breeze to speak of, the turf soccer field at Grand Haven High School was nearly unbearable to play on Monday. But dozens of young soccer players shrugged off the oppressive heat on the first day of the Lakeshore Premier Soccer Club camp, which will run all week. That means it's up to the players before hand, then the coaches during the event, to make sure that the heat doesn't lead to serious safety concerns.

No end on the horizon for hot temperatures

West Michigan and the Tri-Cities area is in for a stretch of hot weather as temperatures are expected to float near 90 degrees for most of the week. Aaron Ofseyer, WZZM-TV meteorologist, said temperatures in the Tri-Cities for most of the week will run in the high 80s to low 90s with heat indexes near 100 degrees. "Not since 1988 have we seen this kind of heat (for this long),' he said.

Grand Haven varsity football coach Mike Farley joked that "back in the stone age,' when he attended high school, the preparation for the upcoming football season would mean showing up a week prior to opening practice to begin marginal conditioning and weight lifting. The times sure have changed.

City Council to look at public safety director recruitment Monday

Grand Haven City Council members will consider the next steps toward finding a new director for the city's Department of Public Safety when they meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 519 Washington Ave. Council will be asked to approve a recruitment profile for filling the vacant GHDPS position. Capt. Rick Yonker is serving as interim director. City officials said the profile will be used in the recruitment process, providing specific criteria for the final interview and appointment process of a new director.
