National Day of Prayer continues the tradition established by the Continental Congress proclamation in 1775. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

A new landmark came to permanent port at the corner of U.S. 31 and Seventh Street in Grand Haven on Monday morning. The new 41-foot boat - the same type used by Station Grand Haven from 1976-98 - arrived late last year after city crews removed an older 36-foot boat from the intersection and took it to a Muskegon museum. Volunteers spent the winter preparing the new boat for placement.

Fifty "littles' from Big Brother/Big Sisters of the Lakeshore, along with their "bigs,' will be going to the major leagues in July thanks to the effort of a Grand Haven Township man. The July 19 trip will be made possible thanks to the fundraising efforts of Dave Palmer, who is seeking to raise $5,500 to send the 100 people to Comerica Park in Detroit for a Tigers-Angels game.

Ottawa County residents can breathe a little easier, according to the results of the American Lung Association's annual report released this week. According to the "State of the Air 2012' findings, the county's air quality has improved from an F to a C grade, based on ozone pollution.

A building that housed a furniture store for years is now getting a new life after sitting empty since 2008. Contractors knocked the false front off the former Porenta's Furniture store, 111 N. Third St., and cut several new windows into the brick building.
