Work is beginning to start on additional improvements to the Northwest Ottawa Water System, near Mulligan's Hollow, and with that project comes plans by the city to optimize recreation options in the area. This work follows a renovation of the water treatment facility on Sherman Avenue that expanded output from 15.5 million gallons per day to 23.25 million gallons per day. The cost of the expansion project was $15.4 million.

A White Pines Middle School eighth-grader recently won a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond for taking fifth place in the country for an essay he wrote on patriotism. Schaefer Thelen's essay was originally part of a class project at the school with the theme, "Does patriotism still matter?' Thelen's work took first place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars district level, earning him a $200 prize. Thelen's essay advanced to the VFW state level, where it also took first place and a $1,000 prize.

A Crockery Township man arrested after threatening his neighbor with a gun in May was ordered to spend 90 days in jail when sentenced Tuesday in Ottawa County Circuit Court. Joshua Curtis Andrews, 25 Forsythia, Nunica, had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of felonious assault and aggravated indecent exposure. A charge of possession of firearms while under the influence of alcohol was dismissed.

As Gov. Rick Snyder promotes collaboration between local governments, Grand Haven City Council took its first steps toward that goal Tuesday night in several areas with its neighbors. City Council approved an agreement to seek a grant with the Michigan Municipal League that would allow for a $48,000 study on collaborative fleet maintenance services amongst Ferrysburg, Spring Lake, Spring Lake Township, Grand Haven and Grand Haven Township, and the Grand Haven and Spring Lake school districts.

A 17-year-old Grand Rapids boy received help from a surfer, after the teen became too tired to make it back to shore while swimming in Lake Michigan early Tuesday evening, said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews were called to the area of the City Beach in front of the Bil Mar Restaurant about 6 p.m. for a person in distress, Boyle said. The teenager was about 300 yards from shore. "(The boy) said he swam to the buoy and became too tired to swim back,' Boyle said.

A 39-year-old Marne man was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday for possession of a gun while intoxicated, said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Police located the man when they discovered his vehicle at the Rodeway Inn, at the corner of Beacon Boulevard and Taylor Avenue, in response to an alert sent over police radio to check on the man's well-being, Boyle said. Nobody was injured and the man was arrested without incident, Boyle said.

Grand Haven High School has a new principal after its former leader was promoted this month. The Grand Haven school board on Tuesday unanimously approved the hiring of Tracy Wilson, currently the high school's assistant principal. Wilson is the first female to be hired as principal of Grand Haven High School that Superintendent Keith Konarska knows of, he said. "I think that speaks very positively of her professional development at the high school,' he said.
