After 11 years of service, Roger Cotner is stepping down from the Loutit District Library Board. In his letter of resignation to the board, the local attorney said "it has been a real privilege' to be associated with the library, and he felt it was "time for someone else to bring new and fresh perspectives to this important position.'

When Sandra Shelley heard on the radio about the shooting of seven people in Grand Rapids Thursday evening, she was driving west to Muskegon on Interstate 96. Moments later, she and other drivers were diverted onto the Plainfield Avenue N.E. exit by two police officers who were standing near their car with their guns drawn, she said.

It was a day of change for U.S. Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven on Friday, as the community said good-bye to outgoing Cmdr. Robert Hemp. During his farewell to the community and personnel of the U.S. Coast Guard in Grand Haven, Hemp thanked the men and women serving here. "No officer successfully completes a command tour without a crew committed to success,' he said.

City planning commissioners have decided to move forward with the process of updating the city's master plan, which would allow for a Principal Shopping District within Grand Haven's Downtown Development Authority district. A PSD allows a municipality to collect revenues, levy special assessments and issue bonds in order to address the maintenance, security and operation of a district in order to promote economic development within a defined area.

The three-wheeled Cushman used to patrol parking areas in Grand Haven will soon be replaced by a more economic vehicle. At its meeting on Tuesday, Grand Haven City Council approved a bid of $13,370 from Deur-Speet Motors of Fremont to provide the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety with its new cadet vehicle - a Chrysler GEM e2. "We had in the budget around $25,000 to get a replacement for (the Cushman),' said Lt. Joe Boyle of the GHDPS. "I felt we could save some money by looking around.'

Matthew Dickinson, 9, smiled as a colorful bird stood on his shoulders. The macaw, Dickinson's favorite bird, flapped its wings and added to the chorus of squawks throughout the room. Margie Davis of Grand Haven presented a children's program at Loutit District Library on Thursday morning. She brought parrots from the Lakeshore Parrot Haven Sanctuary to teach kids about the birds.

The local Chamber of Commerce has announced its support for a new bridge over the Detroit River. The Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg recently voted to support the New International Trade Crossing - an initiative deemed vital to the economic competitiveness of Michigan, Chamber officials said. The decision was based on a recommendation from the Chamber's Public Policy Committee.

Kids are invited to try their hand at hand-sewing a drawstring trinket bag as part of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's "Tuesdays History for Kids' program on July 12.
