Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital after colliding in the bowl of the Grand Haven Skate Park early Tuesday afternoon. Bob Hammond, 28, of Grand Rapids and Nick Heil, 16, of Fruitport, were both alert and talking when they were taken away by North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance and were going to be OK, said Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Officer Tom Winegar. Police and paramedics put Hammond and Neil on backboards and slid the stretchers up a ladder from the skating bowl.

Tuesday Musicale will continue to celebrate the 100th year of its founding by sponsoring a concert at Grand Haven's Central Park, at Washington Avenue and Fourth Street, at 7 p.m. July 12. The concert will feature the Java Jive group from Grand Rapids. These musicians will present swing and jazz music mainly from the 1940s and '50s. This concert is funded through the Grand Haven Area Arts Council and the S.J. Westerman Foundation. Birthday cupcakes will be served at the concert.

An Ottawa County man who authorities said slit the throats of two horses belonging to his wife and a stable owner, as retribution for his belief that the two were having an affair, was sentenced today to 60 days on an electronic tether. An Ottawa County Circuit judge in Grand Haven also sentenced 47-year-old Dennis Finkler to two years probation, about $20,000 in restitution and fines, and community service. The Conklin man pleaded no contest in May to torturing and killing an animal, and malicious destruction of property.

The hottest spot in Grand Haven for Independence Day weekend fun-seekers was almost certainly Grand Haven State Park. The park's acting supervisor, Melissa VanderVelde, said thousands of people came to camp, swim or play on the beach over the three-day weekend. On Monday alone, VanderVelde said she estimated that around 5,000 people came to the state park. "The beach was standing-room only, at least in front of the pavilion,' she said, adding that the park's 174 campsites were full Saturday through Monday.

The Grand Haven Board of Light & Power's director of production, Dan Bush, retired from his position with the municipal utility on Thursday. "It's with mixed emotion that I'm leaving the BLP, which has truly been a great way to wrap up a 41-year career in the power industry,' Bush said during his retirement luncheon at the utility's J.B. Sims Generating Station on Thursday.

Grand Haven's city and state park beaches received honorable mention on a listing of the Great Lakes' best beaches provided by a Florida International University professor. Stephen Leatherman, nicknamed "Dr. Beach,' gave the honorable mention ranking to Grand Haven, as well as Lake Michigan's North Beach in Racine, Wis.

After a winter and spring of repair along a segment of the Grand Haven boardwalk, officials rededicated the section - and announced that they have plenty of funding available for any work in the future. Ken Formsma, who organized the 2009 fundraiser to repair the boardwalk, said the boardwalk will always be able to be maintained because "money is not an issue.'
