John Martin remembers getting his first library card when he was a kid at Grand Haven's former Carnegie Library on Third Street and Columbus Avenue - currently the Fifth Third Bank parking lot. Now, he is the new director of Loutit District Library just a few blocks away. "Everyone I run into in this town has just been super welcoming and great to work with - not just the library people, but people in town,' said the 55-year-old who became the library director last month.

For residents who have never met a president of the United States, their chance to do so is Monday, said historical interpreter Bill Chrystal. Chrystal will lead a town meeting as John Adams, the second president of the United States. "It's a great way to encounter the past and to realize how much we owe to the founders and also to realize what a great legacy they've given us,' Chrystal said.

The Rotary Club of Grand Haven is switching gears this year, and instead of a high stakes raffle, will present a public wine and beer tasting event on the waterfront. The "D'Vine Event' will take place on Thursday, June 30, from 6-9 p.m. at 1 S. Harbor next to Waterfront Stadium.

Ottawa County Marine law enforcement officers will participate in Operation Dry Water and will be out on the water on Saturday looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state level. Operation Dry Water includes increased marine patrols, as well as boater education. Impaired boaters can expect penalties such as, fines, jail and loss of boating privileges.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety is joining law enforcement agencies across the state for a Fourth of July holiday crackdown on drunk drivers. Motorists will see increased patrols beginning July 1 through July 10 in Grand Haven. Local law enforcement officers said they will take to the streets working to prevent drunk driving injuries and deaths by arresting impaired drivers.

Despite losing its headlining acts, the Harbor Island Sunfest will still be held on Saturday. Lifehouse, an alternative rock band, and American Idol contestant Chris Medina had originally been lined up to play the festival, but canceled due to scheduling conflicts, said Dave Fritz, president of the Grand Haven Eagles and festival organizer. Ticket holders have the option of getting a refund from where they purchased the tickets, or holding onto them for access to a V.I.P. section directly in front of the stage, said Eagles' secretary Dean Nash.

Area residents are invited to "Come Grill with the Marines' during a steak dinner benefit from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday at the American Legion, 700 S. Harbor Drive. The cost is $12 and all proceeds will go to SupportForMilitaryFamilies.org, which is led by Marine Corps League Chaplain Linda Zoerhof. The event will feature karaoke and prizes. It is sponsored by the Shoreline Detachment of the Marine Corps League, but benefits local families of veterans and active-duty members of all branches of the armed services.
