Organizers of the upcoming Sand Sculpture Contest said they don't want the significance of the event's 30th anniversary to go unnoticed. "Thirty years of Sand Sculpture Contest is really something to celebrate,' said the event's coordinator, Courtney Olson of the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg. Olson organized a slogan contest in April, with the intent to have the winning slogan printed on special-edition Sand Sculpture Contest T-shirts. "Come Share Our Sandbox' titled the winning entry.

When Collin Veele was babysitting with his girlfriend, he noticed a recurring problem: One of the 3-year-olds they were watching kept unbuckling himself in the car. Veele and classmate Alex Cotton thought about the problem and came up with the Buckle Blocker - a device that prevents children from pushing the release button on seat belt buckles. Now, the two Grand Haven High School alumni are hoping that people will chip in to get their product into production.

For 30 years, Loutit District Library has had a special friend. The Friends of Loutit District Library, a group of volunteers that raises money for various library projects, has played a key role in helping out the library through the years. The Friends celebrated 30 years of service and support to Loutit District Library with a community open house on Wednesday at the Grand Haven library.

The Grand Haven Planning Commission has decided to make changes to a proposed ordinance that would regulate the placement of wind energy turbines within the city. Currently, provisions regarding wind energy are in other city ordinances, and the new ordinance would put them into one centralized spot. Grand Haven officials used the Ottawa County's model wind ordinance as a template for creating the proposed ordinance.

"Consider the Lilies' is name of the latest exhibit at Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven. The exhibit of flower art in 30 different media, from wood carvings and concrete flowers to various fabric art to photography and oil, includes artists from the church as well as guest artists.

The country's flag was honored and later burned Tuesday evening at separate ceremonies in Grand Haven. The local Elks Lodge, joined by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Grand Haven, held its annual Flag Day observance at Waterfront Stadium.
