Beach Survival Challenge educates, entertains at Grand Haven State Park

Eighty teams took turns crawling under nets, pulling dummies to safety, throwing life rings and answering water safety questions in an obstacle course aimed at informing participants in the 8th annual Beach Survival Challenge. The challenge drew what organizers said was an unprecedented turnout as more than 480 participants competed at Grand Haven State Park on Saturday.

Grand Haven Eagles host Christmas in July toy ride

Grand Haven Eagle Riders 925 will have a Christmas in July Toy Run on July 9. Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon, with the ride starting immediately after. There is a $5 donation fee. Sponsor stops are Fruitport Eagles, Red Rooster Restaurant, White Lake Eagles and back to Grand Haven Eagles. Upon the return, there will be a food and beer tent opening at 4 p.m. Admissaion into the tent will be a unwrapped gift minimum of $5 or a $5 donation. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Quarter Below will provide entertainment from 6-10 p.m.

Splash pad on track for August completion

Residents and visitors to Grand Haven's harborfront are closer than ever to having a new splash pad to play in. It will be located near Chinook Pier and the Municipal Marina. "We hope to get the building going in the next few days,' Gernot Runschke of GMB Architecture said.

Special-edition Sand Sculpture T-shirts now available

Organizers of the upcoming Sand Sculpture Contest said they don't want the significance of the event's 30th anniversary to go unnoticed. "Thirty years of Sand Sculpture Contest is really something to celebrate,' said the event's coordinator, Courtney Olson of the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg. Olson organized a slogan contest in April, with the intent to have the winning slogan printed on special-edition Sand Sculpture Contest T-shirts. "Come Share Our Sandbox' titled the winning entry.

GHHS alumni create Buckle Blocker

When Collin Veele was babysitting with his girlfriend, he noticed a recurring problem: One of the 3-year-olds they were watching kept unbuckling himself in the car. Veele and classmate Alex Cotton thought about the problem and came up with the Buckle Blocker - a device that prevents children from pushing the release button on seat belt buckles. Now, the two Grand Haven High School alumni are hoping that people will chip in to get their product into production.

Principal Shopping District plan hearing is Monday

Grand Haven City Council members will have a chance to hear from the public about a proposed special assessment and Principal Shopping District that would likely encompass the city's Downtown Development Authority district when they meet Monday night. The meeting at City Hall, 519 Washington Ave., will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Special library friendship now 30 years old

For 30 years, Loutit District Library has had a special friend. The Friends of Loutit District Library, a group of volunteers that raises money for various library projects, has played a key role in helping out the library through the years. The Friends celebrated 30 years of service and support to Loutit District Library with a community open house on Wednesday at the Grand Haven library.
