The local American Legion post is sending nearly 30 boys to the 72nd annual American Legion Wolverine Boys State, to be held June 19-25 on the campus of Northwood University in Midland. Post 28 in Grand Haven recently voted to send 29 boys to the weeklong event. The boys must be high school juniors. They are named through cooperation of the post, high school faculty and leading citizens. Legion Boys State and Auxiliary Legion Girls State are a practical learning experience in local and state government.

Local author Lydia Meyer will read aloud from her newly published book, "Lillie's Redemption,' at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, in Loutit District Library's Program Room A. "Lillie's Redemption' is a tale about a small town's struggle from trauma within the church, and how they find help in talking about it and working together. Meyer will also answer questions and share the writing journey with stages of the novel to show. Meyer will have books available to purchase and sign following her program.

"Uniquely West Michigan' is the focus of the June exhibition at Gallery Uptown in downtown Grand Haven. The exhibit will feature husband and wife artists Mike and Catherine McClung of Spring Lake. Although Mike has been creating furniture for most of his life and Catherine has been selling her paintings for 35 years, this will be the first time they have exhibited together.

An Ottawa County man, who authorities said slit the throats of two horses belonging to his wife and a stable owner as retribution for his belief that the two were having an affair, has pleaded no contest in the case. Dennis Finkler of Conklin entered the plea Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court to two counts of torturing and killing an animal, and a charge of malicious destruction of property. The 47-year-old faces up to five years in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on July 5.

Children in the day care programs and adults heading to and from their workouts had an opportunity to learn about safe boating during an event held Tuesday outside the Tri-Cities Family YMCA. "We're encouraging life jackets - especially for the kids - on the boat or at the beach,' said Petty Officer 1st Class Sean Long, who was representing U.S. Coast Guard Station Grand Haven at the event.

Rita Cherry was 30 years old when she was diagnosed with scoliosis. A mass under her shoulder blade alerted her doctor and discovered that her spine was behind her right shoulder blade. The Grand Haven Township resident's spine is in the shape of the scoliosis signature "S' - but backward, with her right shoulder bumping backward, she said. "I had heard of it, but didn't know much about it,' Cherry said of scoliosis.

Bariatric surgery was added this month to the list of services offered by the North Ottawa Community Health System in Grand Haven. During the past several months, NOCHS officials say they have worked to establish a relationship with Grand Rapids-based Grand Health Partners. This independent bariatric surgical group is also conducting surgeries in Grand Rapids at Spectrum Health and St. Mary's hospitals.

Attendees of this year's sixth annual Rib Fest at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2326, 20 N. First St., will be helping out a soldier with Grand Haven roots. A portion of the proceeds raised at this year's festival, set for Friday and Saturday, will go toward the costs associated with a new service dog for U.S. Army Sgt. Jason Regis. "I am going to use this dog to help other soldiers that are at Fort Sam Houston and Walter Reed (hospital),' Regis said. "I would also like to get more soldiers involved in VFW.'
