Time is running out for anyone who wants to file as a write-in candidate for local elections on Nov. 8. According to Grand Haven City Clerk Linda Niotis, though there is a space for a write-in vote, there are still rules in place on who's name counts in the vote tallies. "In order to be eligible to be a write-in, (candidates) have to turn in their paperwork by 4 p.m. this Friday,' Niotis said.

With only three returning starters on the defensive side of the ball for the Grand Haven Buccaneers varsity football team this season, the consensus among outsiders of the program in early August was that expectations should be downplayed and a rebuilding season could be in store. More than two months later, senior Norris Ellis and the rest of his teammates sat in the upper level of Kirby Grill in downtown Grand Haven, and what flashed on the television screen on Sunday was proof that they had far exceeded those early expectations.

It was standing room only at the Grand Haven Community Center on Monday night, where city voters were able to get an idea of who the candidates were for mayor. Former City Councilwoman Geri McCaleb and write-in candidate Ken Sharkey took part in the forum sponsored by the local League of Women Voters and Chamber of Commerce, and the Grand Haven Tribune.
