Loutit District Library's free Sunday Afternoon Concert Series continues with an Oct. 9 performance from the Folias Flute and Guitar Duo. The concert will take place in the library's upper-level lobby, beginning at 2 p.m. The Grand Rapids-based Folias Flute and Guitar Duo was founded in 2002 by Carmen Maret and Andrew Bergeron. The couple perform original flute and guitar music influenced by classical, tango and jazz.

In honor of International Walk to School Day, the students of Ferry, Voyager and Griffin elementary schools are being encouraged to walk to school on Wednesday. With the assistance of parent volunteers, Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers and Kids Hope mentors, students will make their way from a centralized location to their respective schools. Between 8:25 and 8:35 a.m., Ferry and Voyager students will meet at Second Reformed Church, 1000 Waverly Ave. Students will assemble in an orange cone area.

Sharing services among local communities and organizations is becoming more of a standard in Michigan. In an effort to save money, Grand Haven Area Public Schools and the city of Grand Haven will be sharing its technical services through June 2012. The Grand Haven school board and Grand Haven City Council each unanimously approved a cooperative agreement to share technical support during their respective meetings Monday night.

Dana Kollewehr said the work of young artists for the second annual ArtWalk Youth Competition was "amazing.' Nearly 30 works of art by area youth - all under the age of 18 - were on display this past weekend at Loutit District Library. The public voted Saturday and Sunday, and awards were announced Monday in four categories for each of three age groups. The competition was part of ArtWalk 2011, as it was for last year's inaugural event in Grand Haven.

A 50-year-old Holton man will spend up to 25 years in prison for robbing a Ferrysburg convenience store at gunpoint on Aug. 1. Jon Lee DeJong, 8816 Holton Road, was sentenced Monday morning by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Jon Hulsing. DeJong was ordered to serve between 12 and 25 years on the armed robbery charge, and 2-5 years for fleeing and eluding a police officer. An habitual offender charge had been dropped in exchange for the guilty plea on Aug. 15.

Cool temperatures and blue skies washed over East Grand River Park in Grand Haven on Saturday for the seventh annual Eastown Fallfest. "I think we have a good crowd going - especially since other things going on in town today,' Fallfest volunteer Annette Nelson said Saturday. Other events taking place Saturday included the annual C.R.O.P. Hunger Walk and the ArtWalk 2011 Family Art Party in downtown Grand Haven.

George Aiken, Harvey Blount, David Hunton, Harley Bement and Joe Steel could not be more different from each other. Some of these men were well-educated; some illiterate. One was well-respected; others not. One committed suicide; another lived to be 111 years old. But each shared a common fate. Margie Viveen will share their fate at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum during two presentations in October. Both programs will take place at the museum's Akeley location, 200 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven.

Grand Haven's offense has been spectacular through the air this fall. On Friday, it was the Buccaneers' ground game that stole the show. Senior running back Devin Howard rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Dakota Smith added 138 yards and a pair of scores, helping the Buccaneers roll over the winless Grandville Bulldogs, 41-13, on Homecoming night at Buccaneer Stadium. The Bucs' offensive line paved the way for the victory as Grand Haven ran the ball 51 times for 375 yards.
