In conjunction with the "Bling' exhibit at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum, local jewelry maker Carla Kocher will be teaching a jewelry-making class at the museum from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Kocher, a Grand Haven resident, has taught more than 200 jewelry-making classes.

The "Rocket Fish' posters are in, and the brochures containing a map of artists and venues will be ready for Wednesday's reception marking the opening of the second ArtWalk in Grand Haven, said event organizer Steve Loftis on Monday. ArtWalk 2011 kicks off at noon Wednesday when Mayor Roger Bergman and other city officials create a live painting - working under the old Grand Theater marquis in downtown Grand Haven. An opening day party will be held at ArtWalk headquarters, 18 N. Fifth St., from 7-11 p.m. Wednesday.

A toddler playing with a lighter started a house fire late Monday afternoon on Slayton Street, according to Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews responded to 1539 Slayton St. at 3:45 p.m. when a woman called 911 and said a bed was on fire. Andrea Young tried to extinguish the blaze, but quickly called 911 and evacuated the house - said her husband, Matt Young. Andrea and the child were the only ones home at the time. They were not hurt, authorities said.

As Dan O'Keefe sliced open a salmon, pointing out its organs and the proper way to filet the big fish, Colleen Bloomquist of Grand Haven encouraged her 7-year-old granddaughter, Ellie, to get a close look. "It's really neat to see that this is happening here and that (salmon) can develop the way they do,' Colleen said.

As tears welled up in his eyes, Grand Haven senior Jeremy Lattig collected his grandmother, Lee Lattig, in a smothering hug. His emotion had nothing to do with the Buccaneers' 38-14 win over Jenison, which had wrapped up just moments ago. A victory on the football field seemed insignificant to the victory Lee Lattig scored over cancer several years ago.

Once Grand Haven had a firm grasp on what Jenison's offensive attack was going to be, the Wildcats had no chance. The Buccaneers believed Jenison would show a veer offense with a heavy focus on the quarterback option, but after pregame warm-ups, a week full of preparation was scrapped.
