Open house for Holland youth dance classes is Saturday

The Holland Area Arts Council will host a free open house for its Youth Dance Company from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Arye Shannon-Carmichael will be introduced as the program's director. She will give examples of steps and movements the kids will learn during the classes. An early registration discount of $10 will be applied that day only and can even be combined with the sibling discount of $10 per semester.

Couple rescued from Lake Macatawa on Thursday

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Holland rescued two people in Lake Macatawa on Thursday afternoon. A man and woman, both of whom were wearing life jackets, were rescued. Their names and ages are not being released. The couple was spotted while Coast Guard crews were underway on a routine patrol aboard a 25-foot small response boat. The crew saw the two people fall into the water after their 15-foot sailing vessel capsized at about 2:15 p.m.

VanArendonk leaves Central; to play at Hope

The Hope College men's basketball team is a welcoming a 6-foot-10 NCAA Division I transfer in October. Center Nate VanArendonk is leaving Central Michigan University to join the Flying Dutch-men. Hope coach Matt Neil confirmed Van-Arendonk's decision on Thursday. He said the Grand Haven native will be one of several incoming freshmen at Hope this fall, but declined further comment. VanArendonk would have four years of eligibility remaining. He missed the final 28 of CMU's games last season due to mononucleosis and received a medial redshirt.

President Obama visits Holland plant

President Barack Obama used his visit Thursday to an advanced battery plant in Ottawa County to promote his program to create jobs through clean energy. Obama toured a Johnson Controls Inc. plant in Holland that makes batteries for alternative-fuel vehicles such as hybrid or electric cars and trucks, then spoke to employees and others. Johnson Controls has received a $300 million federal grant and expects to create 150 jobs at facilities in Michigan and Wisconsin, White House energy adviser Heather Zichal said.

President Obama to visit Holland this afternoon

President Barack Obama's planned visit to an advanced battery facility in Ottawa County was expected to highlight how technology could help automakers reach new fuel efficiency standards announced by his administration. Obama was to visit a Johnson Controls Inc. facility in Holland this afternoon. His appearance came after announcing new fuel standards for cars, light trucks and work trucks. The Johnson Controls factory makes advanced batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Hope gallery to host ‘Island Reflections: The Contemporary Art of Curaçao’

The vibrant and diverse contemporary art and cultural heritage of the Caribbean island of Curaçao is the focus of an exhibition in the gallery of the Hope College De Pree Art Center, beginning Aug. 19. The gallery will feature "Island Reflections: The Contemporary Art of Curaçao' through Oct. 1. In addition, there will be an artist talk at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and an opening reception at 5 p.m. The exhibit, artist talk and reception are open to the public. Admission is free.

Coast Guard seeks information on Holland rescues

The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking help from the public to identify those involved in the rescue of several swimmers from violent rip currents near the Holland State Park beach pier head on Aug. 3 by a Coast Guardsman, representatives from other agencies and local citizens. The Coast Guard is compiling information about the case and is seeking the identities of a male teenager and a female teenager who were rescued at about 2:45 p.m., as well as information from anyone who witnessed any of the rescues.

Symphony to play ‘Pops in the Park’ on Saturday

The Holland Symphony Orchestra is offering a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. "Pops in the Park' will take place at Holland's Kollen Park, at VanRaalte Avenue and 10th Street in Holland. Bring a chair and enjoy a variety of symphonic music as the sun sets over Lake Macatawa. The rain location is Holland Civic Center, 150 W. Eighth St.

Hope College educator dies after battle with cancer

Claudia Hayes-Hagar, a long-time art educator who was a part-time lecturer at Hope College in art and education for 14 years, died on Sunday, August 8, at age 59 following a battle with cancer. She joined the Hope faculty in 1997, teaching courses in art and education with an emphasis on elementary art instruction in addition to teaching in the West Ottawa Public Schools.

Holland library reduces open hours, staff

Herrick District Library is reducing public service hours and staffing as part of a cost-savings measure. The changes will go into effect Aug. 22 at the Holland library and its North Side Branch. The changes were delayed until then because the staff said it was crucial to follow through with programs scheduled as part of its Summer Reading Club. The change in public service hours is taking place due to a loss of revenue of approximately $630,000 over the past three fiscal years, mainly due to the drop in local property values, library officials said.
