All high school students in the Michigan 2nd Congressional District interested in serving their country through one of the service academies are invited to the informational Academy Night, tonight in Holland. The event will be hosted by U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland. It will take place in the Pointe West Room at the Doubletree Hotel, 650 E. 24th St., beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Firefighters were on the scene of two overlapping house fires in Holland early today. The first fire started around midnight in the 300 block of West 18th Street. The second fire started just after 1 a.m. in the 500 block of Lawndale Court. One person in each home suffered smoke inhalation, authorities said. The causes of the fires are under investigation, but fire officials said lightning from approaching storms could be to blame.

The Champions4Children Walk, to benefit the Children's Advocacy Center of Ottawa County and the Michigan Chapter of the National Children's Alliance, will be held in Holland on Saturday, May 21. It will begin at 8 a.m. at the DeVos Field House parking lot. Through this statewide walk, the Children's Advocacy Center of Ottawa County and similar centers across the state say they will increase public awareness about child abuse issues and expand people's knowledge about their services.

The recently renovated Holland Armory will be vibrating with the sounds of decades gone, but certainly not forgotten, on Friday, May 20. The "Eighties at the Armory' dance event will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 at the door and open to ages 21 and older. Jacob Wildfong, a junior at West Ottawa High School, is the winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition for the Michigan 2nd District. He won for his abstract digital photograph, titled "Flicker.' U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, attended the reception Saturday morning at the Holland Area Arts Council, where he met with competition finalists and helped announce the winner, as decided by a four-judge panel of art and design professionals.

Hope College President Dr. James Bultman, who has led the college since 1999, has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the 2011-12 school year. Bultman, 69, announced his intention to retire to the campus community on Monday afternoon. He had informed the college's Board of Trustees during the board's spring meeting held on campus late last week.

A week after edging out Grand Rapids Christian at the Frank Grimm Relays in Wyoming Park, the Eagles got a bit of revenge by nipping the Buccaneers' girls track and field team by just four points at Saturday's Von Ins Relays at West Ottawa. "We had a couple technical miscues that cost us this meet, but that's why we run these Saturday meets, to fine tune our skills,' coach John Tarr said.

Hope College will contribute to Holland's annual Tulip Time festival this week with organ recitals from Wednesday through Saturday. Occurring every half-hour, the 20-minute performances begin at 10 a.m. each day. The last performance of the day will begin at 1:30 p.m. The recitals will take place at Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

A well-traveled sofa has completed its long journey from the halls of the nation's capitol to the small, Midwest town that its former owner calls home. Former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra gained national attention during his tenure for his choice to sleep on an office sofa in lieu of taking on a Washington apartment or hotel. The sofa became an icon for the Republican congressman from Holland and a nod to the thrifty traditions often associated with West Michigan's sizable Dutch-American population.

The Holland Lions Club chicken barbecue will be a major part of the 2011 Holland Tulip Time Festival, serving their chicken barbecue dinner that includes a char-broiled half-chicken, salad, applesauce, roll and dessert, as well as a beverage. Dinners will be served from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 11-13. On Saturday, May 14, dinners will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The dinners will take place at the big yellow tent on Eighth Street, between Maple and Washington, just west of the Holland Civic Center.
