The Hope College Great Performance Series will present the Enso String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Dimnent Memorial Chapel. Recognition of the award-winning young ensemble has included a 2010 Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music Performance. Shortly after the group's inception at Yale University in 1999, Enso had success at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and won the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and the quartet has consistently received high praise for performances ever since.

Police said the pilot of a single-engine plane was killed when his aircraft crashed near the runway at Tulip City Airport on Thursday night. The crash happened on the northeast end of the airport around 6:45 p.m. Police have not released the name of the pilot, as they were still trying to notify his family members. The Holland Sentinel reported on its website that the pilot was a 60-year-old Gobles man who was practicing "touch-and-go landings' at the Holland airport; and he was the only occupant of the experimental, home-built plane.

Two Grand Rapids-area men were taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia after their fishing boat swamped in Lake Macatawa and they had to swim to shore, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Terrance Mullenix, 39, of Wyoming; and Brett James, 32, of Grand Rapids, went fishing in a 16-foot fiberglass boat about 5 p.m. Friday, Garvelink said. The boat started taking on water when the men were about 200 yards south of the Anchorage Marina on the north side of the lake.

A major research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to Dr. Graham Peaslee of the Hope College chemistry faculty will be used to support a project aimed at recycling at the atomic level. Peaslee is leading an effort to develop a system for collecting left-over radioisotopes generated through the use of large particle accelerators. He noted that the material, which currently goes to waste, could then be put to a variety of uses depending on the type collected - from cancer treatments to detecting illicit nuclear activity abroad.

Hope College musicians will perform a "Brown Bag Concert' at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. Eighth St., at noon Friday, Oct. 7. The public is invited and admission is free. Founded and directed by Dr. Andrew Le of the Hope music faculty, the concert series takes place on the first Friday of each month. Each hour-long program consists of a variety of musical offerings from Hope students and teachers.

Police arrested a man and a teenage male Tuesday at a Holland apartment complex. Shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday, a resident in the MeadowLane Townhouse complex told police he saw two individuals carrying items out of a neighbor's residence. The resident said he yelled at the suspects, who then took off running. A maintenance man in the complex said the suspects, who were wearing masks, ran through the complex. The maintenance man gave chase, police said, but the suspects attempted to elude him.

A West Michigan call center is looking to hire 50 new employees. The positions are for roadside assistance specialists at the Novo One Center in Holland. The starting wage is $9 per hour with benefits. Applicants who want to apply should go to the Michigan Works office on Clover Street in Holland from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Novo One is asking that you apply online and bring your resume. If applicants do not have a computer, the Michigan Works office will provide them to use.
