A federal permit allowing the SS Badger ferry to dump coal ash into Lake Michigan has expired, and it's uncertain whether the vessel will be able to operate next year.
The Mason County Historical Society's plans for the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum recently got a boost when the museum to be housed at the former 1934 Coast Guard Station Ludington received word it would be the recipient of a scale model diorama of the Elberta railyard.
A Lake Michigan ferry that travels between Wisconsin and Michigan would be allowed to stay afloat even though it dumps 500 tons of coal ash into the lake each season, under a special provision added to a bill pending in Congress.
