Police: Toddler critically injured from alleged child abuse

A 20-month-old child - critically injured in what police are calling an aggravated case of child abuse - has been released from the hospital into foster care, said Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung. The Nunica girl possibly faces life-long complications from her injuries, DeYoung said. Police have identified the suspect as a 28-year-old Holland man who is the boyfriend of the child's 21-year-old mother.

The investigation is ongoing, but paperwork requesting charges is expected to be submitted to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office early next week, DeYoung said.

Local police became involved in the case after emergency medical personnel responded to a call at 9:04 p.m. March 18 at Trapper’s Cove Apartments, 17980 Cove St. in Ferrysburg.
