Softball roundup: Lee leads Trojans to league win

A dominant outing by Fruitport junior pitcher Bari Lee helped the Trojans improve to a 2-0 start in the Lakes Eight Conference on Thursday. Lee struck out 10 Newaygo Lions batters, didn't issue a walk and allowed just four hits in Fruitport's 9-2 victory. With the win, the Trojans improve to 7-3 overall. Fruitport's big inning came in the fourth, when it produced four runs. It added single runs in the fifth and sixth and put the contest out of reach with three more in the seventh.

Alex Brandow and Lee each had 3-for-4 performances at the plate, with Lee tallying a double and two RBIs.

Senior Brittany Lee added two hits for the Trojans, who battle in a doubleheader at Ludington today.

VIKINGS SINK BUCS

Grand Haven suffered a pair of losses to visiting Whitehall on Thursday.

The Vikings took the opener, 14-1, then won Game 2 by a 6-2 score.

Brittany Brown and Chelsea Meloche each had a pair of hits for Grand Haven in the opener. Emily Shaler added a base hit and drove in the Bucs’ lone run.

In Game 2, Carly Grimes had a pair of hits. Riley Sokolow and Sarah Deal each added a hit, while Hailey Vandenberg added an RBI.

Kari Bareham pitched for the Bucs, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five.
