Postal carriers to collect for food pantries May 14

The employees of the U.S. Postal Service in Grand Haven and Spring Lake will be participating in a National Food Drive on Saturday, May 14. The postal employees will be collecting nonperishable items as they deliver the mail to their postal patrons. Place a donation in, on or near your mailbox, and your mail carrier will pick it up and deliver it to the local food banks. Nothing perishable, frozen or out of date will be accepted.

All items collected will be donated to the local Salvation Army, Love INC and The People Center in Spring Lake to provide needed food and other items for their food banks. Some of the most needed items include canned meats (tuna, chicken, stews, etc.), peanut butter, breakfast foods (cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, syrup, etc.), paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, tissue, etc.), and personal hygiene products (shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand/bath soap, dish soap, laundry soap, etc.). Other items to consider include coffee, shelf milk, soups, spaghetti sauce and juices.

The areas being covered for collection of donations by postal employees will include any Grand Haven and Spring Lake mailing address (all 49417 and 49456 ZIP code delivery).

The drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, U.S. Postal Service, AFL-CIO, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Campbell’s Soup Co. and the United Way of America.
