Ferrysburg teen safe when car destroyed by fire

Grand Haven High School junior Gabrielle Calderon was driving back home after dropping her mother off at work late Wednesday afternoon when her car started acting up. Calderon told emergency officials that the car wouldn't go faster than 30 mph as she traveled south on 168th Avenue. When it started to smoke, Calderon stopped the car and jumped out. "It just burst into flame,' she said. "I'm in shock.' The car was fully involved when firefighters arrived shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Firefighters used water, then foam to quickly put out the fire, which gutted the older model Ford Taurus station wagon.

The car was totaled, according to Lt. Steve Bruneau of the Spring Lake Township Fire Department. The value was estimated at $4,000, he said.
